Britain and Commonwealth Britain is an island, so it has always traded with other countries all over the world and had a large empire overseas. Commonwealth is an association of the ex-colonies in the Empire and its members are encouraged to have cultural relations with each others. Africa was forced to leave the Commonwealth in 1961 because of apartheid and rejoined in 1994 after “one person, one vote” elections. There are many different styles of government in the Commonwealth.

- There are many different styles of government in the Commonwealth. Some countries, such as Canada, Australia and Newzealand recognise the Queen as their head of state. Also, all of the countries recognise the Queen as head of the Commonwealth, though some countries feel there should be an elected leader.
