Theatre and film in GB and Slovenia
The theatre, with its centre in London, is very strong in Britain. Most towns, larger and smaller ones, have their, usually repertory, theatres. Main themes in theatrical plays are darker sides of the personality and of personal relationships. The British, however, prefer going to the cinema to visiting theatre. The cinema is not regarded as part of the arts – it is simply entertainment. Partly for this reason, Britain is unique among the large European countries in giving almost no financial help to its film industry.

Partly for this reason, Britain is unique among the large European countries in giving almost no financial help to its film industry. British film directors often go to Hollywood because the resources they need are not available in Britain. As a result, comparatively few films of good quality are made in the country. This is not because expertise in film making doesn’t exist. It does. American productions often use studios and technical facilities in Britain. Moreover, some of the films which Britain does manage to make become highly respected around the world. Bit even those films often make a financial loss.
The theatre in Slovenia is weaker than in Britain. Most places have their own ‘theatre’, it is in fact “Home of Culture” (Kulturni dom, Dom kulture), where activities connected with the arts are organised and carried out. Most famous Slovene theatres and opera houses are: Slovene National Theatre Maribor, Slovenian National Theatre – DRAMA, Slovenian Philharmonic, The Ljubljana City Theatre and the Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana. Producing films is encouraged and supported by the Slovene government. In recent years, Slovene film industry has produced around seven feature films each year. Approximately 150 Slovene feature films have been made so far, plus a few hundred documentaries and short films. Slovene films are relatively of poor quality. However, also Slovene films have received some public recognition and were awarded with prizes.
