“The Story of an Hour” shows us two very interesting themes. We can see the connection between freedom and happiness. Is it possible to be happy without freedom? And also does the freedom always mean the same? This story is a very good example showing us problem with freedom among women in 19th century. Women had nothing to say at these days. We see the girl who was very unhappy in her marriage.
She was abused by her husband and she really belonged to him. When she realized that he died, she also realized that she could be finally happy. She was not free when he was her husband, and then she could do anything she wanted. It shows us that freedom is a huge part of happiness. It does not matter if it was 200 years ago or it happens now. People need freedom, they want to decide for themselves. We cannot be happy, if we cannot do what make us happy. Freedom should be a choice. Finally, we cannot be happy without freedom at all. Not everyone needs the same level of freedom. Some people like to decide about everything, but some do not. It has to be our choice. Only then we can be happy. Everyone has a different definition of happiness, so also definition of freedom has to be related. At “The Story of an Hour” we can see that freedom and happiness for her, means that her husband will not abuse her anymore. She could decide for herself and do whatever she wants. That is why she was so shocked when he came suddenly, and then she had a heart attack. For everyone freedom could means something else. Everything depends on our situation and also on our definition of happiness. As we could see freedom and happiness are connected. There is no freedom without happiness, and also there is no happiness without freedom. We have an example from 19th century, but nowadays it is still actual. Even if we have different definition of happiness and freedom, all of us we need them both at the same time.
