
Fort McHenry
Fort McHenry is located in Baltimore in Maryland. It is a fortification in the form of five-pointed star. An oversized American flag had been sewn by Mary Pickersgill in anticipation of the British attack on the fort. The fort was attacked only once time at 13 September 1814 during the War of 1812. This day at first light, British navy started bombardment the fort. After the attack Francis Scott Key saw intact flags.

Inspirited by this event wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner”- the poem that would eventually be set to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven” and become the national anthem of the United States. Now Fort McHenry is protected as Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine by National Park Service. Previously the flag has fifteen horizontal red and white stripes, as well as fifteen white stars in the blue field. Now the fag have 50 white stars.
