Global language is an idea that has been growing in peoples’ heads for a long time. There has already been an attempt to create one, and it failed. The opinions whether English should be replaced with an artificial global language are divided. Let’s see what are the theoretical and practical aspects of such effort. First of all, as it was said in the excerpt, English is a difficult language with very sophisticated structure, which is unpractical in terms of learning. A global language should be as simple as possible to shorten the time necessary to master it, so anyone could speak it with no problem at all. Moreover, having English as a global language can be considered as unfair for non-English speaking nations, as children born there are forced to learn English from their early childhood. The other argument for promoting an artificial language is that it would facilitate the worldwide communication. English may be seen as “international”, but in fact, it’s not spoken everywhere. Introduction of an artificial replacement would make the job of translators during official meetings unnecessary. On the other hand, English is very deeply rooted in society. Hardly would it be possible to leave it all behind. The governments and people would be unwillingly to accept such big changes. Furthermore, it would take inconceivable amount of money to finance the necessary works, such as printing workbooks for people all over the world (translated first into many languages) and educating the teachers. Finally, we must consider if such actions really are necessary, when English, despite it’s difficulty and a load of historical and political baggage, appears to cope well with its role. To sum up, there are strong arguments for and against the idea of making a new global language. The topic is very controversial, because any changes in current situation would greatly affect our culture, and that’s why such a language will probably remain in the sphere of imagination. English has become so strong that if anyone wants to replace it, he’ll have a hard task.
