The Vietnam War created opposition not only between countries but in a country itself. In 1971 when john Lennon song ,”imagine” was interpreted as a hope for peace after the brutality of the war.John Lennon, a musician uses a simple style to express his feelings towards the world and his idea of world peace. In the song,”Imagine” John Lennon used rhythm, repetition, and imagery to paint a picture of world peace after the Vietnam War.
Lennons rhythm is shown throughout the whole songs as he says things like,” Imagine there’s no countries/It isn’t hard to do/Nothing to kill or die for/And no religion too”(Lennon 6-9) In this verse he rhymes the second and fourth line expressing his feelings of not having to be at war with other countries and not having to be killed or kill for because of peace. The mood caused by this is sorrow. In the second verse it says,” You may say I’m a dreamer/But I’m not the only one/I hope some day you’ll join us/And the world will be as one.” (Lennon 11-14) He rhymes the end of the lines explaining that he is not the only one wanting peace and for one day all of us to think of peace like he does, and to be together , loving each other. Lennon rhymes important verses that speaks of diversity. In the poem it says, “Imagine there’s no heaven/ it’s easy if you try/no hell below us/ above us only sky.” (Lennon 1-4). This rhyme shows that there will be nothing to call people sinner or saints because everyone is equal. The rhyming of the songs brings a more emotional impact to it. By using repetition John Lennon tried to get the point of peace to his audience. The song says,”Imagine”(Lennon 1,5,6,19,15,29) Seeing this word over and over helps the message to stay with people and makes it easier to think about how the world would be in peace. Many times during the song Lennon sees not only himself as someone wishing for peace. The songs repeats,”You may say I’m a dreamer/ But I’m not the only one.” (Lennon 11,12,20,21) He uses this style of poetry to explain to his readers that he knows that is wishing for something that may be hard to accomplish but wants to prove the point that he is not the only one standing after peace. John Lennon uses repetition to prove important points such as opposition coming together. The chorus of the song says,”I hope someday you’ll join us/ and the world will be as one.”(Lennon 12,14,22,23) which is an important message that says if the oppositions will come together we will all live happily together and that is why he repeats it. The parts of the song that are repeated symbolize key aspects of John Lennon’s view of peace. The song itself is titled “imagine” which tells you from the start that imagery is a key element. John Lennon uses imagery to draw a picture of the perfect world. In the first verse it says,” imagine there’s no countries.” (Lennon 6) Imagery is used in this as the author tries for the people to see peace through the fact of having no borders definciating us such as countries. it paints the image of humans all living on just land. Through his imagery everyone is as one. The song says ,”Imagine no possessions” (Lennon 15) Through this the author tries to have the citizens of the world see the people of this world sharing and not owning , by imagery. This creates an idea of not being greedy. Continuing to use imagery John Lennon tries to convince the human population to live as one and share everything that was given to not only one human but to us all.. The song says,”Imagine all the people sharing all the world” (Lennon 19) using this makes us see everyone happy and united because greed is an effect of opposition. Lennons style of poetry is simple but quite meaningful. The song had been listened to after the terror attacks of 9/11/01 His view of the world was to live in peace. He tried to share his image with people using rhythm, repetition, and imagery. It is a reminder of peace.
