“Roadside Picnic” is a short science fiction novel written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky in 1972. The film “Stalker” is loosely based on the novel, with a screenplay written by the authors of the book. The movie was released 7 years later after the book.

The book and the film is about an area guarded by soldiers known as the Zone where some time ago took place the landing of an alien race. Stalkers are persons who smuggle people into that area because of unusual artifacts like a room that grants wishes. The screen version of the novel is not the exact image of the book but it keeps the whole sense and meaning.

The action in the film is really slow, what helps bring out things which were on the director’s mind. Very long scenes help you understand what you are actually seeing because you have time to watch more precisely and think deeply. This movie is very hard in reception and not everyone will understand it. However, the book is rather friendlier for potential recipients. The plot is faster and more vibrant. The ending will surely make you think.

Do not miss it. The movie is well worth seeing but only after you read the book. The film is a masterpiece of its kind but it is very demanding in perception as well. Reading at last one of its possible interpretations is highly recommended after the first watch.
