Not so long ago, even half a century in the past from now, almost every family looked the same. Man was the head of family and his most important role was to earn money. He worked long hours and when he came back home, he wanted to rest and eat a hot meal. And that was the role of woman – to cook, take care of home and bring up children. Although not every man appreciate it, it’s not easy and every woman felt satisfied when she fulfilled her duties. However, times have changed and customs have changed. Nowadays this shape of family is very rare and some people consider it as outdated. In the past the most important thing was to start a family and bring up children. Currently, when you ask a young woman what are her plans for the future, she definitely won’t answer ‘to raise my own family and have five children’. People care more about their education and work, because they want to live at high level. What is more women want to be independent. From the early years of 20th century suffragists were fighting for equality of rights. Even now we hear about feminists who are dissatisfied with being treated in other way than men. Furthermore, more and more common become families in which woman is a wage-earner and man is a householder. Actually, at present it’s really tough to support family financially when only one of parents works. Especially in Poland, where national average salary is rather low. As everyone knows, people aspire to upgrade their level of living. In many cases money is the highest priority. In my opinion the pre-war shape of family is just a stereotype now. If, as it usually happens, both of parents work, they should share the housework. Then they can feel fulfilled and can afford to live comfortably. I think it’s important to support each other in marriage. Everyone deserves to have time for relax and enjoying life.
